At the airport and want to buy some quick gluten free and allergy friendly snacks for the flight, looking for a gluten free meal or just have time for gluten free fast food? Well, thankfully now, airports around the world are beginning to offer gluten free and allergy friendly snacks and food for travelers at food stands, quick service carry-outs and markets.
One of my favorites is Cibo Express Gourmet Markets which can be found at major airports across the US and Canada.

One of my favorites is Cibo Express Gourmet Markets which can be found at major airports across the US and Canada.
At Cibo, you can typically find an assortment of naturally gluten-free and allergy free foods including certified kosher foods. This quick service carry-out establishment is filled with healthy foods such as fresh fruit, freshly cut vegetables, hard-boiled eggs and salads. They are also now carrying gluten free and allergy free treats such as brownies, cookies and candy as well.
While there are many allergy-friendly options available at Cibo Express and similar markets around the US and the world like Boots at the London Heathrow International Airport, you still need to be sure to read all the product labels of items you are interested in before making your purchase.
Also we are now seeing more and more fresh food stands offering gluten free items for sale. I will always remember how absolutely thrilled I was when I found gluten free and dairy free muffins at the food stand in the 3-gate terminal in Rotorua New Zealand. It just made my day!!
Also I love stopping by the Giraffe Restaurant in London's Heathrow Terminals as well as throughout the UK with their very clearly marked gluten free menus.
That being said, I always, always pack snacks with me before heading to the airport just in case I am not able to find any safe gluten free and allergy free snacks or if I don't want to take the time trying to find something that I can eat.
Another favorite gluten free fast food is Chipotle Mexican Grill for a number of reasons from an allergen perspective:
It is easy to navigate for a gluten free option. My favorite is the burrito bowl.
The only ingredients that contain dairy are the queso, cheese and sour cream.
They do not use eggs, mustard, sesame, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts or any other kind of nuts in their food.
Servers are willing to change their gloves when requested to avoid possible cross contact.
If I can't find a Cibo Express or Chipotle in the airport, then I use the iCanEat Fast Food Apple app to help me find gluten free fast food and allergy-free menu options from 45 U.S. fast food and quick service chains that are commonly located in airports.

After being asked about my favorite gluten and allergy free snacks at conferences, I thought I would share my top picks with you! Hope you enjoy them too! First, since I'm 100% gluten and casein free, I like having different types of fresh fruits and vegetables with me.
When writing the Let's Eat Out! series, I created a detailed checklist with a few pages of snack suggestions (download PDF) requiring no preparation, hot water preparation and a cooler.
While on the road, I always have some packaged snacks with a mix of protein and carbs as well. Here's my top gluten and dairy free snack recommendations for traveling, work and back to school manufactured in the US:

Plant Fusion is a great protein mix that is free of all major allergens including dairy, soy, gluten (wheat), eggs, nuts, fish, tree nuts, or shellfish. Also free of artificial flavors and preservatives. The chocolate is my favorite flavor!
Chocolate bar from Enjoy Life - boom CHOCO boom ricemilk crunch available on-line and at Whole Foods - free of the top 8 allergens
Sandwich with toasted Udi’s bread and Applegate roasted turkey found at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market and grocery stores. (Notes: Udi's just started selling individually packaged breads, buns and muffins which are now available from their website. If I won't be eating the sandwich for a number of hours, I also freeze the Applegate turkey packages and let the meat defrost prior to preparing my sandwich on the go!)
Another idea for you, if you like to eat sushi - I would recommend that you purchase the small packets of gluten free / wheat free soy sauce from San J available on-line and in specific grocery stores.
There are also some great on the go products in the market made from certified gluten free oats. Unfortunately, I have difficulty digesting certified GF oats but if you are fine, I would also recommend the following which are available on-line and in a lot of stores:

After hearing about Kayla K 's gluten free travel to Puerto Rico, I asked her to be a guest writer and share her gluten free finds and adventures in and around San Juan. So here is what she has to say in her own words:
Being diagnosed with celiac disease within the past 8 months, my parents and I were a little nervous about our spring break trip to Puerto Rico. We had no idea what to expect for food. In fact, my mom thought I was going to have to live off of fruits the entire vacation. Not only was she wrong, but there were even a wider variety of gluten free foods for me to eat!

At my hotel, the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, they had several gluten free menu options. One of the lunch items I ate near the pool was an excellent Caesar salad topped with steak strips and a side of French fries that they specially prepared for me in a dedicated fryer! This hotel was right on the beach with outside seating and they had a swim up food and drink bar!
One of my favorite parts of the trip was an EcoQuest rappelling and zip lining trip. First, we went hiking up waterfalls and then rappelled down a different waterfall. They had snacks which were all fruits including papaya and bananas that were freshly picked.
After zip lining through the jungle to return to our starting point, they provided a delicious meal that was freshly prepared at the family's own house. The tour guide's grandmother prepared the meal, which included a chicken leg, rice and really yummy beans (and I am not a huge bean person). They also had super amazing corn fritter appetizers that were made from strictly corn flour. For dessert, we ate a gluten free coconut flan. I can't believe that even my dessert from a native Puerto Rican grandmother was gluten free! I highly recommend this experience!!
One night we went to a restaurant close to our hotel called Uno Chicago Grill which had a menu of gluten free options that they could prepare. I had the gluten free stuffed chicken, with broccoli and mashed potatoes, which was awfully scrumptious!
On a day trip to El Yunque Rainforest, we were concerned that there would not be any gluten free options for lunch. We stopped at the only restaurant in the rainforest named Yuquiyú Delights. Even at this small restaurant, I was able to eat superb gluten free kabobs and chips which made for a great lunch.
On our last night, we found this really cute little restaurant in downtown San Juan called Inarú that served some gluten free food. I had a Mofongo, a native dish which consisted of meat in an edible plantain-made bowl. If you have the chance to get one of these, get it because it is splendid. This native dish was made with all food items grown on the island. This place is must go!
Puerto Rico is a great place to vacation because they can accommodate gluten free options depending upon the restaurant. The food is great and fresh too, and I could even eat at places you wouldn't expect to be able to eat! I highly recommend it for people with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity or intolerance.
